Hiking with canine companions in the San Juans

Hiking with canine companions in the San Juans

While Russia is burning and many areas of the U.S. are suffering extreme heat, we are enjoying exceptionally fine weather this week in the Pagosa Springs area.  The annual “monsoon season” brought welcome rains and is now winding down.  (I’ve had great success these past two weeks gathering wild mushrooms up in the mountains.)

This afternoon the temp is 75 degrees with 25% humidity and just a light breeze.  Skies are Colorado blue with fluffy white clouds drifting casually from west to east.  This is perfect for just about any activity, or doing nothing at all. Here’s a link to my favorite local weather site: PagosaCam.com

The photo above appeared today on the PagosaDailyPost.com. It was taken by Peter Coe and it inspired me to be grateful one more time that I am living, working and playing in this mountain paradise, Pagosa.

Cruisin’ Down the San Juan

Floating down the San Juan River summer 2010

Vying for the "Most Average Finishing Time"

The fifth annual Cruise-A-Thong just finished up in Pagosa.  I don’t know who this year’s winner was, but it would be the “competitor” with the “Most Average Finishing Time” in this spoof athletic event “for the average Joe”.

The  easy going competition includes a bike race, a walk through town in flip flops, and a tube float down the San Juan River – all in colorful costumes to add even more fun to the event.

This photo is by Bill Hudson at the PagosaDailyPost.com.  See his write-up here.

Independence Day Parade

The San Juan Squadron kicks off this year's parade

This year’s parade was kicked off with a flyover formation and a couple of skilled rolls by the San Juan Squadron, affectionately known locally as the “Pagosa Air Force”.

July 4th weekend is a festive time in Pagosa Springs and the Rotary club has sponsored an Independence Day Parade for many years.

It’s a grand small-town affair where we stop the traffic through town for an hour or so and a good part of the populace is either in the parade or lining the parade route to watch their friends, neighbors and families parade down main street.

There are children and smiles everywhere, with displays of military remembrance, fair and festival royalty, floats, lots of horses, and of course political candidates for upcoming elections.

“The Parade” is such a special event that I have a web page dedicated to it.  Check out this link for several photos of parades past.

On Eagles Wings

Local sculptor Chad Haspel finds creatures in dead trees

Local sculptor Chad Haspel finds creatures in dead trees

Local sculptor, Chad Haspel, has a huge talent for seeing beautiful creatures in dead trees – and “pulling them out” of the wood so the rest of us can enjoy them also.  Birds, fish, mountain lions and bears all emerge into view for our admiration and enjoyment when he gets to work on a seemingly spent dead pine tree.

Several such dead tree trunks in the Pagosa area have now been transformed into works of art.  They are typically created right where the tree still stands and add a touch of magic to several park areas and recently even the local hospital grounds.

I saw this particular piece, named “On Eagles Wings” on PagosaDailyPost.com.  It  was commissioned by Peggy Andrews as a memorial to her brother.  She also shot the photo.

Moose twins and Mom

Moose twins and their mom cooling off in a lawn sprinkler

Twins and Mom cooling off

This video clip brightened my morning a few days ago … and again each time I’ve watched it.  Enjoy a smile!  This endearing scene is not from Pagosa, but it could be.  Moose are coming back into the area in still very small numbers.  There is an effort each fall to educate hunters on the fine points of telling the difference between a moose and an elk – there are no licenses available for moose hunting here.

Stopping at the Bear Creek Saloon for a ‘cold one’

Horse recently hitched outside of Bear Creek Saloon

Saving on gas the old-fashioned way

With the weather warming up, a stop at the Bear Creek Saloon for a burger and a cold beer is an inviting thought.  This cowpoke decided to do just that, leaving his horse tethered to a modern day hitching post.  This photo was featured June 14 on PagosaDailyPost.com.
